Prof. Dr. Gül Rengin Küçükerdoğan was born in Istanbul in 1966. She completed her undergraduate and master’s studies in French Language Education at Istanbul University in 1990, and between 1993 and 1996, she earned her doctorate from the Public Relations and Advertising Program at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Communication. Her dissertation was titled “A Method Proposal for Analyzing the Linguistic and Visual Communication in Advertising Imagery: A Case Study.”
Between 1990 and 2002, she worked as a lecturer in the Department of French Language Education at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Literature. She then transitioned to Istanbul Kültür University’s Faculty of Art and Design during its founding phase as an Assistant Professor. After a year in the Department of Communication Arts, she was promoted to Associate Professor in 2003 in the field of “Applied Communication” at the same institution. In 2009, she was appointed as a Professor at Istanbul Kültür University. In 2017, she left Istanbul Kültür University and in January 2018 joined Hasan Kalyoncu University as a Professor in the Department of Visual Communication Design during the founding of the Faculty of Communication.
She served as Dean at both the Faculty of Art and Design at Istanbul Kültür University from 2015-2017 and at the Faculty of Communication at Hasan Kalyoncu University starting in 2020. She also held department chair and academic division head positions at both institutions. Additionally, between 1993 and 1996, she worked as an expert in the Broadcast Planning and Coordination Department of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT). She also served as Vice President of the International Association of Visual Semiotics (AISV/IAVS).
Prof. Dr. Küçükerdoğan has been involved in many national and international congresses, such as the 1st National Communication Congress (2000), the International Congress on Visual Semiotics VISUALIST 2012, and INMECS’21 (International Media and Cultural Studies Congress 2021), serving as a Coordinator and Scientific Committee Member. She has worked as an editor for journals such as “Ara Sıra” and “The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication” (TOJDAC), and was the editor of the coursebook “Advertising Campaigns and Advertising Practices” for Atatürk University’s Open Education Faculty.
As a member of the ILAD-ILEDAK Communication Education Accreditation Board, she has taken part in various accreditation assessments, working as an evaluator for the Communication Faculties of Medipol University and Nişantaşı University. In October 2023, she was elected to the ILEDAK Executive Committee.
She has authored three books in the field of advertising, published by national publishers: “How to Analyze Advertising?”, “Interculturality in Advertising”, and “The Discourse of Advertising”. She also co-authored a “Dictionary of Communication” (Effective Communication Terms) and translated “World Art History”.
With over 100 articles, papers, and book chapters published nationally and internationally, Prof. Dr. Küçükerdoğan has contributed to the fields of branding, brand symbols, graphic design, and brand semiotics. From 2009 to 2011, she wrote for “Brandage” magazine, and from 2011 to 2014, she contributed to “Graphic Design Magazine” as a columnist.
Currently, she serves as Vice Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Hasan Kalyoncu University. Prof. Dr. Küçükerdoğan is fluent in French and English.
